Report Your Injury to Your Employer. If you have been injured on the job or develop an occupational disease, it is important to notify your supervisor immediately. You must give notice to your employer if you have a Workers' Compensation injury. This should be given immediately or as soon as reasonably possible, following your injury.
Seek Appropriate Medical Treatment. It is important to obtain appropriate medical treatment when you have a workplace injury. If your employer has a company doctor, or a company health care facility, it may be appropriate for you to go there. You may also need to receive treatment at an emergency room or other appropriate facility. North Carolina Workers' Compensation laws allow your employer to direct your medical care and tell you where to get treatment. If your employer will not do this, you can seek reasonable medical care for yourself.
Notify Your Medical Provider That You Have a Work-Related Injury. It is important that you communicate to your medical provider that you have a work-related injury so that they may properly document this fact, and so that the health care provider can properly bill the Workers' Compensation insurance company.
File the Workers' Compensation Claim Forms. An employee should file a claim form, called a Form 18, with the Industrial Commission when they have a Workers' Compensation claim. An attorney can assist you with this form, or file the form for you, if you desire.
Follow Your Physician's Instructions for Treatment. Make sure that you follow and comply with all treatment recommendations made by your physician. If you refuse, or fail to do this, it can damage your Worker's Compensation claim.
